Oblong folio (32 x 46 cm.) pp.[iv+36]. Later half brown morocco over contemporary marbled boards . Ownership inscription of Emma Leegrew, Feb 29th, 1852, to front endpaper. Ex libris Alexander A. Berens. 19 illustrations (on 18 leaves) each shown in four states, etching, aquatint, aquatint with sepia wash and hand-coloured aquatint (i.e. 76 illustrations in total), and the text with colour samples interspersed. plates dated 1818 except for three dated 1811 and 1812. Occasional minor spotting, light dampstain to top right corner of last few leaves, final plate neatly repaired along lower margin, head of one text leaf cropped without any loss of text.

Originally issued in parts in 1813 Hassell deconstructs pictures by the leading artists of the day offering insights into their methods and colouring.

Abbey, Life, 140 - for the first, also undated, edition, with the plates all dated 1811-13.
