FIRST EDITION. 8vo. (c. 21.5 x 14 cm.). pp.xxviii+[ii]+415. Contemporary brown calf, sides with triple fillet gilt ruled border, spine with raused bands, gilt decorated compartments, twin maroon labels, marbled endpapers and edges. Engraved portrait frontis., large folding map with original outline hand colour, folding plan of Buenos Ayres plus 4 further full page plates (2 with partial hand colouring). Upper joint repaired, spine rubbed, head and toe slightly chaffed, endpapers spotted, contents generally very good, short tear to map at join to inner margin. Presntation inscription on title oage to "Mrs Brassey (?)/from/L.E. Parish/ Sept/ [18]55" (probably from Sir Woodbine's second wife, Louisa)

Inserted is a newspaper cutting headed "Accused Widow takes POISON" dated in ms. Daily Mail 22 Feb 1926
"From our own correspondent /Buenos Aires, Friday/ The Brazilian widow of the late Mr. Marcus Woodbine Parish, who was murdered in Misiones Territory, Argentina, last May, attempted suicide by taking corrosive sublimate yesterday./ The woman was awaiting trial on a charge of instigating her lover to commit the crime. The prison doctor saved her life with difficulty./Mr. Parish, who was the grandson of Sir Woodbine Parish, Minister at Buenos Aires 100 years ago and signatory of the first treaty between Great Britain and Argentina, was shot dead from a wood while motoring to his estate".
