LA FONTAINE, Jean de.

Fables de a Fontaine, avec figures gravées par MM. Simon et Coiny.
Paris: Chez Bossange Masson et Besson. [1796.].

Six vols. 18mo. 14.5 x 10cm. A very nice set in contemporary French half calf and marbled boards, flat spines ruled & lettered in gilt. 241 fables in 12 books. Frontispiece and 274 engraved plates after drawings by Vivier, including 'bis' plates and plates in appended extracts from Ovid's 'Metamorphoses', all in fine dark impressions Light damp-stain to outer margins of last two volumes, occasional minor spotting, generally fresh and clean.

This scarce and charming set of the complete fables is slightly expanded from the original collection of 239 'Fables Choisies' published by La Fontaine from 1668-1694 and is a re-impression of Didot's 1787 edition with all the same engravings. As well as Classical sources such as Aesop, Horace and Phaedrus, La Fontaine drew his stories from closer to home and the works of Rabelais, and from farther afield, in India and Persia.
