FIRST EDITION. Oblong folio (28 x 38cm). pp.xxii, 96, 89 plates. Original gilt and black decorated yellow cloth, label of Eccle Riggs Library to front pastedown, presentation inscription to front fly-leaf, "Lord Cross / With Sir Lepel Griffin's Kind regards / Sep. 1887". A few marks and small stains to boards, some wear and staining to extremities of 2 or 3 leaves, contents generally very clean and fresh.

"The present volume has been issued with the sole desire of placing, by the autotype process, on permanent record in public and private libraries, accurate representations of the more important architectural monuments of Central India, before time, neglect, or barbarous and greedy hands shall have destroyed the buildings which have so special an artistic value in relation to the ancient arts of building and sculpture in the east [...]".
