4to. (21 x 16 cm). Full original brown calf with gilt stamped titles to upper cover and gilt stamped borders to upper and lower covers. Gilt tooling to inside edges of covers. Yellow coated endpapers. Presentation inscription in black ink to ffep dated November 1863. All edges gilt. Title page elaborately decorated in pen and ink, the title housed in an attractive cartouche decorated with floral motifs, birds, maltese armour and the maltese cross. 51 early photographs showing scenic views, architecture and scenes of everyday life in Malta. 50 pasted in with titles and borders in pen and ink, 1 loose. Covers worn at extremitites. Old price label to bottom right corner of upper board. Spine perished, front board thus loose but holding. Discolouration from glue at edges of pastedowns. Some toning to edges of plates but generally clean and fresh.
