A Map of the Environs of London Extending Twenty five Miles fr. the Metropolis. London: Edward Stanford, 55, Charing Cross. [c.1880].

Map dimensions 89.5 x 92.5 cm, overall dimensions 95 x 99 cm. Folding map of the environs of London showing the extents from Welwyn in the north down to Edenbridge in the south and Stanford-le-Hope in the east to Windsor in the west. Full original colour, with county borders highlighted, parks and woodlands shaded green and the boundary line of the Board of Works marked out in red. Decorative scrolled border, panels to lower edge with explanation to map and imprint.
Dissected into 40 sections and backed onto linen, folds into brown cloth gilt lettered covers. Yellow publisher's advertisements to front pastedown and to verso of end section of map. Covers worn at extremities, small area of advertisement at inner cover missing though without any loss of text. Neatly repaired small tear (without loss) to one section at upper left corner, otherwise a very good example.

Originally published by Cruchley, this one of the early editions with Stanford's imprint.

The map shows the extension of the Metropolitan Line from Willesden to Harrow and the extension of the District Line from Earl's Court to Putney Bridge (both opened 1880).
