2 vols. 4to. (27 x 18 cm). Half title, engraved title, title+vi-xx+596; half title+[v-]xi+[2]+4-556*. Contemporary half red morocco over marbled boards, spines with gilt tooling, ruling and titles, red speckled edges. Presentation inscription 'To John' in red ink on the first free end paper of volume 1. Ownership inscription of 'John Dowding' in blue ink on the same page. Ownership inscriptions of 'W.D. Hubbard' dated 1916 and 'Mary Collings Lainé' dated 1858 to the first free end paper of volume 2. Portrait frontispiece, engraved title page with vignette view. Profusely illustrated with 145 woodcut vignette views and portraits and 4 full page steel engravings. 12 double page maps with original hand colour and vignettes by John Tallis.** Binding rubbed at extremities. Plate with portrait of Sir Joseph Banks soiled with blue paint mark to right margin. Very light spotting and toning to some leaves, contents generally very clean.

*The preliminaries are paginated up to page xi, there is no pagination on the next two pages and pagination begins again as '4' on the third page after xi.
