Large folio (sheet size 518 x 675mm). Engraved title, Avertissement leaf plus pp.34. Contemporary French cat's paw calf, spine gilt with red morocco label, red edges. Ex libris Bibliothèque d'Hauteville (label and bookplate). Letterpress list of all 111 maps pasted to inside front board. Engraved allegorical title by Baquoy after J. Oger, 111 double-page engraved maps hand-coloured in outline, each with number stencilled on verso, the last three not listed in contents. Title stained at margins and with 45mm tear into image, map 21 [Scandinavia] with 100m closed tear in central area, some maps including 4, 57-60, 90, 100 (Africa) and 102 (North America) with repairs to margins and/or folds, a few unrepaired short tears, some creasing, intermittent light browning, a few stains. Binding rubbed, front inner hinge cracked.
First published by Robert de Vaugondy père et fils in 1757-58. This edition contains the 108 maps listed on p.34 comprising 12 of the ancient world and the rest of the modern world, plus 3 supplementary maps dated 1785-86, published by Antoine Boudet but without mention of Robert de Vaugondy. These are not listed in the text but they are included in the letterpress table pasted in at front. The text ends on p. 34, and the map of Amerique Septentrionale is dated 1783.
