10 vols. 4to. (26 x 20 cm.). Contemporary full tan calf. Armorial bookplates of Charles William Bury and "T.G.D." Complete with 340 copper plates as listed, of which one with original hand-colour (the Historical Chart in Vol.V) Joints and extremities with some neat repairs. Overall a fine copy.

The rarest of all editions of the Britannica, including the first edition issued in just three volumes in 1771. The second edition considerably expanded the content and number of the entries. It also has more than twice the number of illustrations. The controversial inclusion of biographies caused William Smellie, editor of the first edition, to decline working on this.
