FIRST EDITION. 3 vols. 4to. (28 x 22 cm). pp. [2]+[vii-]lxxx+[1 errata]+[1-]496; pp. [2]+[v-]xxii+[1 errata]+[3-]504+[2]; pp. [v-]xxviii+[3-]682+[2]. Bound by Bedford in full brown polished calf. Gilt rules and tooling to upper and lower boards. Spine with gilt tooled raised bands, red and green gilt titled labels and gilt decorated compartments. Marbled end papers. Inner dentelles gilt. All edges stained yellow. Engraved book plate of Mary Macmillin Norton to front paste downs. Typed description of the set by Brentano's of New York, on their embossed paper, inserted before ffep. Small slip cut from 'Bernard Quaritch's General Catalogue' with their short description pasted to foot of ffep. Upper joint of first volume neatly repaired. Full page engraved frontispiece to each volume showing pagan symbols and monuments. 'Map exhibiting the position of Paradise and Mount Ararat' facing p. 306 in volume one. Edges very slightly rubbed, a few small scratches to covers. Some intermittent foxing, but contents generally clean and bright.
