ALISON, Archibald.

Essays on the Nature and Principles of Taste. By the Revd. Archibald Alison, L.L.B. F.R.S. Edin.
Edinburgh: Printed for J.J.G. and G. Roibinson, London; and Bell and Bradfute, Edinburgh. 1790.

FIRST EDITION. 4to. (27 x 21 cm.). pp. xiii+415. Full contemporary tree calf, flat spine, red label, gilt rules. Spine a trifle rubbed, generally a very nice copy. Ex libris Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo, with his bookplate and ownership inscription to title.

Alison "with a wealth of imagination and sentiment denied absolutely the existence of objective qualities inherent in objects, accounting for all emotions by the association of ideas aroused in the mind of the spectator. Anything might be beautiful if it aroused pleasant and therefore beautiful ideas." (Hussey: 'The Picturesque'. 1927 p.15)
The book aroused widespread interest and went through six editions by 1825.
