FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 19 x 11.5 cm. pp. [viii]+320+[4, table] Contemporary patterned calf, spine gilt with floral device repeated in panels between raised bands, dark red label., marbled endpapers, red edges. Calling for 270 figures, each occupying c. a third of the page, but in fact with 271, numbered 1 to 269 (includes 2 x no.2 and one additional, "figure détachée" at p.178), plus 2 full page illustrations of dice combinations, plus numerous decorative culs-de-lampe. Damp stain to top third of book more or less throughout - but still a genuine copy, binding rubbed at extremities.

Named Trictrac due to the sound of the pieces, and invented in France c.1500, this is a variant of the game we know as Backgammon.
