Hudson to linen verso, a newer ink annotation stating that W.H. was a friend of a Thomas Scarf 1780?. Slipcase very worn. Paper starting to come away from linen at several points. Margins shaved to neatline on all edges. paper toned overall. £150 The map appeared in Emanuel Bowens Large English Atlas, various editions around this time.

Three detail plans on one folding sheet showing the localised impact of proposed road changes between Central London and the City & East. The three plans concentrate on:
- the route from St. Giles Circus (junction of Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road) across to the junction of Goswell Road and Old Street) approximately running along the same line as New Oxord Street, Bloomsbury Way, Theobalds Road and Clerkenwell Road - another thoroughfare which doesnt appear to have been built between Clerkenwell Green and the junction of Long Lane, Aldersgate and Beech Street, bisecting CharterHouse Square along the way - another thoroughfare not realised running from the south side of Finsbury Square across to Whitechapel, running straight from Sun Street, through what is now Liverpool Street railway terminus across to Commercial Road
Scale: 200 feet to 1 inch. The first plan runs along the entire length of the upper half of the sheet, the two smaller plans fitting beneath it. A few small marginal tears, otherwise in very good condition. £50 Lithographed by James Basire. The printed signature of the architect Thomas Marsh Nelson of Charles Street appears to the lower right corner. Nelson gave evidence to the Select Committee of the House of Commons on Metropolis Improvements in this year.

[N.D., but c. 1862] [F41124] 23.8 x 32.9 cm. Original lithographed plan, original hand colouring marking out the estates and the roads intersecting those areas. The plan shows the extents from the south side of Hyde Park down to Pelham Crescent and Brompton Square across to Gloucester Road. Scale: approximately 1 inch to 400 feet. Traces of two old horizontal folds, the sheet top edge mounted on card. Some very light offsetting, a few light abrasions at upper left corner. Very small tear towards centre of lower edge, otherwise in very good condition. £650 Lithographed by Day & Son, lithographers to the Queen.
A smaller, modified and probably slighter later version of a plan by Joseph Lofthouse Platt, surveyed in 1852 and engraved by J. & C. Walker. Both plans essentially feature the same information - the outlines of those estates purchased by the Commissioners and the proposed new roads. However, our example also features Exhibition Road (not featured on the earlier plan) and the names of the new roads. An example in the Guildhall Library has an attributed date of 1862.

This example with the imprint of Thomas Bowles, Robert Sayer and John Bowles, though there is no reference to the latters son in the imprint as recorded by Chubb. Chubb also notes that John Tinneys name appears in the imprint of 1760 edition, but not the 1763 edition.

Paper starting to come away from cloth at a few points, some minor creasing at section edges. £375 A single issue of a map usually found in Bowen & Kitchins Large English Atlas, of which numerous editions were published between 1749 and 1787. This example with the imprint of Carington Bowles and Robert Sayer. Tooley, in his Dictionary of Mapmakers (Vol. 1, p. 179), refers to an edition published by the pair with an attributed date of c. 1764.

The rivers shown, including the Severn and the Trent, are depicted with water nymphs. Expert restoration at left and right margins though with some slight loss to the hatching at the extremities of the image. The map would appear to pre-date the Deeside Valley Railway running from Aberdeen through to Banchory, Balleter, Balmoral and Braemar, work on the line commenced in the early 1850s.

Folds into original dark green cloth slipcase, red lettering to upper board. Slipcase worn, with cloth wearing at foot of one spine. Map paper chipped in two places, affecting a small area of the North Sea and the map border respectively. Some minor creasing at section, nevertheless an attractive map. The BL example of the Perrier Motor Map of England and Wales has an attributed date of 1906.

Original hand colouring in block and outline. Undissected, folds between original publishers gilt lettered blue cloth boards. Old ownership inscription to the inner cover. Covers slightly worn, a few light scatterings of spot, but generally in very good condition. £350 Ownership inscription of Richard Glynn Vivian dated August 16th 1856, the place given as St. Helier. Vivian was the fourth son of a Swansea industrialist. On his fathers demise in 1855 he inherited a share in the family business and an annual income, allowing him to indulge his interests in travel and art collecting. Towards the end of his life he donated his collection to the city of Swansea and built a gallery at his own expense. The Glynn Vivian Gallery was opened in 1911, one year after his demise.
