75.5 x 64.5 cm (image size). Large folding map of England and Wales. Original colour in block and outline marking out the counties. The completed railway lines outlined with bold black lines, those in construction marked out with red lines. Small inset map of the Isles of Scilly.
The map dissected into 24 sections and backed onto linen. Folds between publisher’s brown cloth, gilt lettered to upper board. Publisher’s advertisement to front pastedown with descriptions and prices of several maps by Betts including this one, old library marking to upper edge. Another advertisement to the folded end section for the Betts’ Family Atlas.
Unobtrusive library blind stamp to lower right corner. A few very light spots, more noticeable to linen verso. Light soiling to surface of map. Spine of covers expertly repaired. A handsome example. £175
The cover title reads “Betts’s Road & Railroad Map Of England Wales”. The publisher’s advertisement mentions that the “railroads on the following Maps are corrected monthly, so that the Traveller can at any time see with certainty what parts he will be able to reach by Railway”.
Two examples recorded on Copac, located in Aberdeen and Manchester with respective dates of 1850 and 1845.

Chip at lower right margin sometime reinforced on verso, another section reinforced at lower left corner. Nevertheless, an attractive piece with particularly bright colouring. £500

Another noteworthy scene from the map features a group of water nymphs frolicking in the sea just by the estuary of the Stour, some blowing horns another sitting astride a sea creature. Some minor offsetting. Paper lightly though unevenly toned, mostly at margins. A few small neat marginal repairs, otherwise a good example. £450
