BOWEN, E[manuel]. [Australia]. A Complete Map Of The Southern Continent. Surveyed by Capt. Abel Tasman & depicted by Order of the East India Company in Holland in the Stadt House at Amsterdam. London: [1744-8] [33349]
37.5 x 48.5 cm. Uncoloured. Top margin and neatline at upper right corner restored, otherwise very good. £3,500
A wonderful early map of Australia, shown with New Guinea and with part of New Zealand to the lower right corner, as observed by Tasman in his voyage of the 1640’s. This is the first British map solely concentrating on this region.
The projection of the northern, western and southern coastlines of Australia is well developed. The eastern coastline, however, is quite inaccurate. The coastline to the north east extends right up towards New Guinea across what is the Gulf of Carpentaria. Save for some detailing around Van Diemen’s Land, the south east coastline remains entirely uncharted.
Two panels of text to the centre right of the map providing a history and explanation of the map and also a description of the region.

Possibly c. 1900, reference is made to Philip’s other maps of the “Australian Colonies” (also including New Zealand) on the advert at the front pastedown. Australia gained independence in 1901 and New Zealand in 1907, both becoming members of the Commonwealth. Presumably this map is prior to those dates.
